How does the truck size calculator work?
It estimates CFT from home size and common items, then adds a safety buffer for packing and fragile goods. The result suggests a vehicle category, not a guaranteed final quote.
CFT tool, updated June 10, 2026
Use the truck size calculator to estimate household goods volume in CFT and choose a likely vehicle: Tata Ace, Bolero pickup, Tata 407, 14 ft Eicher, 17 ft container or larger truck. The result is a planning estimate. A mover should still confirm final truck size after checking inventory, building access and route.
Before you compare quotes, get a rough idea of truck size. It helps you catch quotes where a mover suggests a tiny vehicle for a full home just to make the first price look low.

Estimate CFT first, then pick the vehicle. No phone number needed.
Two beds, appliances, sofa, dining, cartons and kitchen.
Estimated goods volume
497 CFT
Suggested vehicle
3 BHK or full 2 BHK with safer headroom
Rs 9,000 to Rs 22,000 local
Use one size bigger if the pickup has basement parking, a long tower carry, many fragile items, or the goods are going intercity.
Ask the mover to confirm truck size in writing. If the truck is too small, the second trip can cost more than booking the right vehicle once.
The calculator gives a planning estimate. If it says 14 ft Eicher, ask each mover whether they agree after seeing your inventory. If one quote says Tata 407 and another says 14 ft, ask both for the second-trip rule in writing.
Household goods do not load like perfect boxes. Beds, sofa, plants, crockery, TV and glass items need space around them. A 10 to 15 percent buffer makes the result more realistic than a tight math-only estimate.
It can under-estimate when you have hidden storage, balcony items, many books, large plants, outdoor furniture or extra kitchen goods. It can over-estimate when you have already sold furniture or are moving a rented, light setup.
Ask for vehicle size, open or closed body, helper count, packing grade, GST, insurance, waiting rule and included distance. Use trucks for shifting, which truck size guide and open vs closed truck to understand the answer.
Truck size affects transport cost, but it is not the full moving cost. Full packers movers charges also include packing, labour, floor carry, lift waiting, GST and insurance. For city cost, use Gurgaon charges, Delhi charges or Noida charges.
If the quote includes GST, check the number through our Verify Packers Movers tool. If a mover claims verified status, understand how ShiftCompare verifies packers movers. A correct truck is useful only when the mover is also accountable.
Say your 2 BHK has two beds, fridge, washing machine, sofa, dining table, one wardrobe and 25 cartons. The calculator will usually move you toward Tata 407 or 14 ft Eicher depending on carton count and buffer. If you tick fragile goods, the result may shift toward 14 ft because glass and electronics need more space.
This does not mean every 2 BHK needs the same truck. A rented 2 BHK with less furniture can be lighter. A family 2 BHK with store-room goods can be heavier. Use the result as a conversation starter, then ask the mover to confirm after seeing the inventory.
If you enter a few cartons, one fridge, one mattress and a small desk, the result may show Tata Ace or Bolero pickup. That is useful for PG goods or small local shifting. But if the pickup and drop have stairs, add helper cost before calling it cheap.
For small moves, the minimum charge matters more than pure distance. A 5 km move still blocks a vehicle and driver. Check mini truck charges per km if you want to understand this cost behaviour.
It cannot see basement height, no-entry rule, tower distance, lane width, society lift booking or the condition of your packed goods. It also cannot judge whether the mover's team will pack correctly. That is why the final quote should still mention access, packing and truck body.
Keep one more thing in mind: if you are moving during rain, month-end or weekend, vehicle availability can change quickly. Book the right size early instead of taking whatever vehicle is free at the last minute.
After you get the calculator result, do not say only "I need 14 ft truck." Say, "My goods estimate is around 420 CFT, with sofa, two beds, fridge, washer and 25 cartons. Do you agree with 14 ft closed body?" This gives the mover a real basis to respond.
If the mover suggests a smaller vehicle, ask what they removed from the estimate. If they suggest a larger vehicle, ask which item is pushing the load up. A professional answer will mention inventory, access or route. A weak answer will stay vague.
Wrong truck size affects more than price. In a tight truck, heavy cartons may sit on fragile goods, mattresses may bend, and furniture can rub against metal edges. In an oversized truck, poorly tied goods can move around during transit. The right size still needs good loading.
Ask how the crew will place appliances, glass items, sofa and cartons. For intercity movement, ask whether goods will be tied, padded and kept away from sharp edges. The calculator helps you choose a vehicle category. The mover's packing process protects the goods.
Your written quote should mention the same vehicle category or explain the change. If the calculator suggests 14 ft and the mover writes only "tempo", ask them to update the quote. A vague vehicle line is hard to challenge later.
Keep screenshots of the estimate, inventory photos and final quote in one folder. If there is a dispute about second trip or wrong vehicle, written proof helps you discuss it calmly.
Once you have a likely truck size, send the mover a clear list: home size, cartons, appliances, furniture, pickup floor, lift status, drop floor, route and preferred date. Ask them to reply with vehicle, helpers, packing, GST and second-trip terms. That reply is more useful than a quick phone amount.
If you are comparing three quotes, keep the same inventory for all three. Changing the item list from call to call makes the quotes impossible to compare and often leads to wrong vehicle planning.
For best results, run the calculator once before decluttering and once after removing items you will sell or donate. The second result is usually closer to the truck you actually need.

CFT means cubic feet. It estimates how much space packed household goods need inside a truck.
Yes. A 2 BHK usually points toward Tata 407 or 14 ft Eicher depending on goods volume. The calculator helps you see which side your load is closer to.
No. It gives a truck fit estimate and broad local vehicle range. Final charges depend on city, labour, packing, floor, lift, GST, insurance, waiting and route.
Choose one size bigger when goods are fragile, the route is intercity, access is difficult, or the calculated CFT is close to a vehicle limit.
Yes. Use the calculator before calls, then ask the mover to confirm truck size after a video survey or item list check.
