Start with the exact business name
Before GST, reviews or price, ask one plain question: which legal business name will appear on the quote and invoice? Many packers movers use a trade name in ads and a different legal name for billing. That can be normal, but it should be explained clearly. If the person refuses to say the legal name, do not pay advance.
Write the name down exactly. Do not rely on a logo photo or caller ID. Ask them to send the company name, GSTIN if GST is being charged, office address and quote scope in one WhatsApp message or email. This one message becomes your first proof trail.
Check GSTIN on the official portal
Use our Verify Packers Movers tool for a quick format check, then open the official GST taxpayer search. The portal should show Active status, legal name, trade name if available and state. Match those details with the mover's quote. A GSTIN from Haryana for a Gurgaon mover can make sense. A random state code with no explanation deserves a question.
GST is not a guarantee of safe delivery. It is identity proof. A mover can have an active GST number and still give a weak quote. So do not stop after GST. Use it as the first gate, then check the quote, payment terms and reviews.
Use MCA only where it applies
If the mover says Private Limited, LLP or Limited, check MCA master data. Look for company name, status and date. If the mover is a proprietorship or partnership, MCA may not show it. That is fine. In that case, rely more on GST, office proof, phone, local reviews and written scope.
The common mistake is expecting every mover to appear in MCA. That is not how small Indian businesses work. The better question is whether the proof matches the type of business the mover claims to be.
Match office, phone and service area
Call the number on the website or profile, not only the number sent by the sales person. Check whether the office address looks real and whether the mover can explain your pickup area. For example, a Gurgaon mover serving DLF Phase 5 should understand tower lift slots, basement rules and security permissions. A vague "haan ho jayega" is not enough for a large move.
| Proof item | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Same number on site, profile and quote. | Only personal number, no company proof. |
| Office | Address is specific and can be explained. | Only city name or fake-looking map pin. |
| GST | Active status and matching name. | Borrowed GSTIN or different billing entity. |
| Quote | Inventory, truck, labour, GST and terms written. | Only one low number on call. |
Read reviews like a customer, not a fan
Useful reviews mention route, move date, home size, packing, final bill and problem handling. A review saying "good service best company" tells you almost nothing. A review saying "2 BHK, Sector 49 to Sector 57, final bill matched, kitchen glass packed safely" is far more useful.
Also check whether the review pattern looks too perfect. If every review has the same sentence style, no route and only five stars, slow down. On ShiftCompare, our review method separates verified customer reviews, community feedback and public reputation notes. You can read how ShiftCompare collects reviews for that line.
Ask for the quote in writing before advance
A genuine mover should be able to write the scope. The quote should mention inventory, packing material, labour, vehicle type, loading, unloading, GST, insurance option, advance and balance. If they say "sir final dekh lenge," you are being pushed into a dispute you cannot prove later.
For invoice and claim moves, also ask who will issue the GST bill and whether a bilty or LR will be provided. If your employer reimburses relocation, read packers movers bill for claim before booking. A bad invoice can delay reimbursement even when the move itself was fine.
Verify the price, not only the papers
Good documents and a bad quote can still hurt you. After GST and office checks, read the price breakup. Ask whether the amount includes packing, labour, truck, GST, insurance, dismantling, waiting, long carry and second trip. If the mover gives only one round number, you cannot compare it fairly.
Use moving calculator for a first range and then compare city pages such as Gurgaon charges or Noida charges. Verification keeps the mover traceable. Price checking keeps the bill controlled.
When to reject a mover politely
You do not need to fight. If proof is weak, say you are not comfortable without written quote and GST or business details. If they push harder, that itself answers the question. A professional team may follow up, but they should not threaten, abuse or make advance payment feel urgent.
Keep your rejection simple: "Please send full written quote, legal name and payment terms. I will confirm after checking." Genuine movers understand that. Risky operators usually lose patience.
Use red flags as pause signals
One mismatch does not always mean fraud. People make typos. Small businesses use trade names. But pressure plus mismatch is dangerous. If the mover gives a very low quote, demands a high advance, avoids GST, refuses written scope and asks for personal UPI only, pause. That pattern is not a normal bargain.
If you already paid and the mover is threatening, holding goods or changing the bill after loading, switch to escalation. Use packers movers fraud complaint or how to complain against packers movers.
My practical verification order
First, get the legal name and GSTIN if GST is charged. Second, check the official portal. Third, match phone, office and website. Fourth, read route-specific reviews. Fifth, ask for the written quote and payment terms. Sixth, pay only a limited, traceable advance if everything lines up.
It sounds like extra work, but it takes less time than arguing after delivery. Bhai, ten minutes of checking before booking can save ten days of chasing later.
