BHK to truck size, updated June 10, 2026

What Size Truck Do You Need for Your Move?

A few-items move usually needs Tata Ace, a compact 1 BHK needs Bolero pickup or Tata 407, most 2 BHK moves need a 14 ft Eicher, and most 3 BHK moves need a 17 ft or 19 ft container truck. Use CFT, access and distance to confirm the size, not BHK alone.

This is the decision page for people stuck between two truck sizes. If you are comparing quotes and one mover says Tata 407 while another says 14 ft Eicher, this will help you ask the right questions before the booking amount goes out.

Which truck size for shifting by 1 BHK, 2 BHK, 3 BHK and villa inventory

Truck size by BHK, fast answer

Use the BHK as a starting point, then correct it with actual goods. A home with modular furniture, books, appliances and crockery needs more space than a rented flat with a mattress and bags.

Why two movers suggest different vehicles

Different quotes can both be honest if they assume different packing and loading styles. One mover may load tightly to save vehicle cost. Another may suggest a larger closed container because your goods include glass, plants, electronics or long-distance transit. The safer mover is not always the cheapest mover.

Ask each mover to explain the truck choice. "14 ft because your 2 BHK has two beds, six-seater dining, fridge, washer, sofa and 30 cartons" is a real answer. "Sir ho jayega" is not enough. Use the moving quote guide to compare the scope, not only the number.

When Tata Ace is enough

Tata Ace is fine for a single item, few cartons, PG shifting, 1 RK, one appliance, small desk, mattress and bags. It is not ideal for a real 1 BHK with fridge, bed, sofa, washing machine and kitchen goods. If a mover pushes Tata Ace for a full 1 BHK, ask whether a second trip is included.

Small vehicles also suffer when building access is difficult. The vehicle may be cheap, but two helpers carrying goods from tower to gate for 90 minutes is not cheap. For small loads, compare few-items shifting charges and mini truck cost together.

When 14 ft truck is the better 2 BHK answer

A normal 2 BHK usually deserves a 14 ft Eicher or Canter. It gives space for appliances, sofa, beds, dining, cartons and protective packing. It also reduces the pressure to stack heavy goods on fragile cartons. We have seen enough second-trip arguments to say this plainly: the right truck once is cheaper than a wrong truck twice.

If the route is local and access is easy, a lighter 2 BHK may still fit a Tata 407. But the decision should be made after inventory. For a deeper vehicle-specific view, read the Tata 407 guide and the 14 ft Eicher guide.

Shared truck vs dedicated truck for intercity shifting

For intercity shifting, truck size is only half the decision. Shared truck or part load can save money for a small load, but delivery may take longer and goods may be handled more than once. Dedicated truck costs more but gives better control over loading, seal, route and delivery date.

If you are moving a family home, expensive electronics or a full 2 BHK plus, dedicated truck often feels calmer. If you are moving cartons, bags and one mattress, shared truck can be practical. Read the route page for your lane, like Gurgaon to Noida charges, before deciding.

Access can change the vehicle decision

Basement height, no-entry time, gate permission, tower-to-loading distance and service-lift slots can all change the vehicle. A large truck may not enter a narrow lane. A small truck may require two trips if goods cannot be staged near the gate. In Delhi builder floors and old markets, shuttle tempo may be needed even when the main truck is larger.

Tell the mover about your exact access before the quote is final. If the truck cannot reach the loading point, long carry and waiting should be written into the estimate. Use waiting charges and loading unloading charges to spot missing lines.

How to compare two truck-size recommendations

If one mover suggests Tata 407 and another suggests 14 ft Eicher, do not assume one is cheating. Ask both how many cartons, beds, appliances and furniture items they counted. Then ask whether the quote includes a second trip if the vehicle falls short.

The better recommendation usually explains the trade-off. Smaller vehicle means lower transport cost but less buffer. Larger vehicle means higher vehicle cost but safer loading and faster completion. For fragile goods, family kitchens and intercity moves, buffer often wins.

Also check body type. A closed 14 ft vehicle and an open 14 ft vehicle do not protect goods in the same way. If one quote is cheaper because it uses open body, read the body-type line before deciding.

Final checklist before you accept the vehicle

Ask for vehicle type, body type, labour count, packing material, included distance, waiting time, GST, insurance and second-trip rule. If GST is charged, verify the business proof through Verify Packers Movers tool. If the mover claims to be verified, see what verification should mean on ShiftCompare's verification page.

The most useful line in the quote is simple: "14 ft closed body vehicle, 4 helpers, standard packing, one trip, pickup and delivery included." That tells you more than a low all-inclusive number with no vehicle details.

One last check: if the vehicle suggestion changes after survey, ask why. Sometimes the mover notices hidden goods and upgrades correctly. Sometimes the first quote was kept low to win the call. The reason matters.

FAQs

What size truck do I need for 1 BHK shifting?

A compact 1 BHK can use Bolero pickup or Tata 407. If you have sofa, fridge, washer, double bed and many cartons, Tata 407 is safer than Tata Ace.

What size truck do I need for 2 BHK shifting?

A normal 2 BHK usually needs 14 ft Eicher or Canter. A light 2 BHK may fit Tata 407, but confirm with an item list before booking.

What size truck do I need for 3 BHK shifting?

Most 3 BHK homes need a 17 ft or 19 ft closed container truck. Heavy furniture, many cartons or intercity distance may need a larger vehicle.

How much CFT does a 2 BHK need?

A normal 2 BHK often sits around 350 to 450 CFT. The range changes with sofa size, beds, wardrobes, appliances, cartons and fragile packing space.

Should I choose shared truck or dedicated truck?

Use shared truck for small intercity loads when timing is flexible. Use dedicated truck for family goods, higher value items, faster transit and better control over loading and delivery.

Can I calculate truck size online?

Yes. Use the truck size calculator to estimate CFT, then ask the mover to confirm vehicle size after a video survey or inventory check.
